Navigating Menopause? Why Detoxifying Your Skincare and Home is Key

Menopause is a significant transition in a woman's life, often accompanied by a host of physical and emotional changes. While these changes are a natural part of aging, did you know that the toxins lurking in your everyday skincare and household products can actually exacerbate menopausal symptoms?

At Husk & Seed Skincare, we believe in harnessing the power of nature to support your body through life's transitions. That's why we're passionate about helping you understand the importance of reducing toxins in your environment, especially during menopause.

Here's why:

  • Hormonal Fluctuations: During menopause, your hormone levels fluctuate dramatically. Exposure to toxins like parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances can disrupt your endocrine system, further throwing your hormones off balance and potentially worsening symptoms like hot flushes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances.
  • Increased Sensitivity: Menopause can make your skin more sensitive and reactive. Harsh chemicals in conventional skincare and cleaning products can lead to irritation, dryness, and even allergic reactions.
  • Overburdened Liver: Your liver plays a crucial role in detoxification. During menopause, it can become overburdened due to hormonal shifts, making it less efficient at filtering out toxins. Reducing your exposure helps lighten the load and supports optimal liver function.

What can you do?

  • Choose Natural Skincare: You don’t need fancy fillers, crafty chemicals, or harmful toxins to achieve the best skin possible. We believe simple, natural ingredients, such as nutritious plant oils and luscious butters are all you need to look good and feel great.
  • Clean Up Your Cleaning Routine: Swap conventional cleaning products for natural alternatives. Baking soda, vinegar, and essential oils can effectively clean your home without exposing you to harsh chemicals. Get inspired by Nancy Birtwhistle's natural cleaning recipes – find them on her Instagram (@nancy.birtwhistle) or in her books.
  • Ditch the Fragrance: Synthetic fragrances are often loaded with phthalates, which are known endocrine disruptors. Choose fragrance-free products or if you’re looking to scent your home, choose natural essential oils.  Be wary of using diffusers, candles and plug-ins loaded with chemicals!
  • Eat a Clean Diet: Focus on whole, unprocessed foods and limit your intake of processed foods, sugar, and alcohol. This supports your liver and overall health during menopause.

Menopause is a time for self-care and embracing a healthy lifestyle. By reducing toxins in your skincare and home environment, you can support your body's natural detoxification processes, minimise menopausal symptoms, and navigate this transition with greater ease and well-being.
