Why We Are Waterless (And What It Means For Your Skin)

Can waterless skincare meet the needs of dehydrated skin?

It’s an interesting question, and a fair one. We’re so used to thinking of hydration as something that comes directly from water in our products that the idea of skincare without it can feel counterintuitive. Rather than seeing this as a challenge, I thought it was a good opportunity to share a little more about how we think about hydration, nourishment and skin health — and why we choose to formulate the way we do.

Water absolutely plays a role in skin hydration. When applied to the skin, water can temporarily increase hydration in the upper layers of the skin, helping it feel softer and more comfortable in the short term. This is why water-based products can feel immediately refreshing, especially if your skin feels dehydrated or tight.

The challenge is that water on its own does not stay in the skin for long. Once applied, it begins to evaporate from the surface. Without ingredients that help slow that evaporation, this hydration can be short-lived, sometimes leaving skin feeling dry again not long after application. This is why many people find themselves repeatedly reapplying water-based moisturisers without ever feeling truly comfortable.

This is where the distinction between hydration and nourishment becomes important. Hydration refers to the presence of water in the skin. Nourishment refers to the lipids, fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants that support the skin barrier and help it function properly. A healthy skin barrier is what allows skin to retain its own moisture effectively.

Because water creates an environment where bacteria and mould can grow, water-based products must contain preservatives to remain safe. These ingredients are necessary and regulated, but for some people, particularly those with very sensitive, reactive or compromised skin, certain preservative systems can contribute to irritation. Emulsifiers are also required to combine water and oil in a single product, and some can interfere with the skin’s natural lipid structure over time.

Our waterless formulations take a different approach. Instead of focusing on adding water to the skin, we focus on supporting the skin’s ability to hold onto its own moisture. Plant oils closely resemble the skin’s natural sebum, allowing them to integrate well with the skin barrier rather than sitting on the surface.

These oils are rich in essential fatty acids and naturally occurring antioxidants that help reinforce the barrier, reduce moisture loss and calm inflammation. By strengthening the skin barrier, waterless products can actually help dehydrated skin become more resilient over time, even though they don’t contain water themselves.

For customers who feel their skin is dehydrated and worry that oils won’t be enough, it’s important to know that dehydration is often a sign of barrier weakness rather than a lack of water alone. When the barrier is supported, the skin is better able to retain hydration from the environment, from gentle cleansing, and from humectants already present within the skin.

Many people find that when they switch to waterless skincare, their skin becomes less reliant on constant rehydration and feels more balanced, comfortable and calm over time. This is especially true for dry, sensitive, mature or over-treated skin.

Waterless skincare is also highly concentrated. Every ingredient serves a purpose, and a small amount goes a long way. Fewer ingredients, no unnecessary fillers, and no need for harsh preservatives or emulsifiers means a simpler, more intentional approach to skincare.

Whether you’re discovering Husk & Seed for the first time or returning to products you already love, our philosophy remains the same. We believe skincare should work with the skin’s natural processes, supporting strength and resilience rather than offering short-term fixes. For us, waterless formulations are the most effective and gentle way to do that.
